Women in Law Awards 2021 - 45 - ABOUT JULIET REDHOUSE Juliet practises patent law and is a partner in the life sciences team of leading intellectual property law firm, Mathys & Squire LLP. With extensive experience in the drafting, prosecution and management of global patent portfolios, Juliet has obtained grant of numerous important patents for her clients, who are primarily in the biopharmaceutical industry. Juliet also advises clients on third party matters, including infringement and validity of third party patents, as well as freedom-to-operate. As a qualified European and UK patent attorney, a significant part of Juliet’s work is patent prosecution and opposition proceedings at the European Patent Office (EPO). For opposition proceedings, Juliet has acted both in defending her clients’ granted patents that have been opposed and in opposing third party patents at the EPO. Post-grant proceedings usually conclude with an oral hearing, and Juliet has represented her clients at oral hearings at the EPO on many occasions, both in person and more recently in videoconference format. Juliet works primarily in the fields of molecular biology, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. She has a broad background across the life sciences, having obtained a first class master’s degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge. Juliet also has a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Cambridge. Since joining the patent profession in 2011, Juliet has developed particular expertise in patents in the areas of antibodies, vaccines, protein and peptide based medicines, personalised medicine, recombinant gene expression and diagnostic assays. Juliet’s clients include global pharmaceutical companies and research organisations, as well as startup companies. She has been commended for her “firm command of cutting edge substantive law” as well as being “a pleasure to work with”. Juliet enjoys keeping up to date with and writing articles on EPO and UK patent case law. Most recently, she has written on patent strategies in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as on more specific aspects of EPO law such as patenting antibodies, and has also presented on strategies for dealing with third party patents at the EPO.
