Women in Law Awards 2020 PERSONAL INJURY LAW UNITED KINGDOM WWW.LAWYER-MONTHLY.COM - 33 - CLAIRE FOX PARTNER AT HORWICH FARRELLY Alexander House, Talbot Road, Manchester M16 0SP T: 07715 118644 | E: Claire.Fox@h-f.co.uk | www.h-f.co.uk ABOUT CLAIRE FOX A specialist defendant litigation lawyer who has been working in the field of personal injury and insurance disputes for more than 25 years, Claire Fox joined HF in 1997 and originally dealt with small claims track and lower level personal injury claims, before gradually moving on to large loss. In 2007 she became a Team Leader, then moved onto a more managerial role - and became a qualified mediator - soon after. In 2012 she became an Associate and Department Manager covering all offices in our Motor & Casualty Department and, the following year, was rewarded for her role in the firm’s growth and success by being made Partner. In 2016, and in her 40s, everything changed when Claire became a Mum. Of twins. A year later, she had her third child. On returning to work following maternity leave, Claire accepted a new role handling large loss cases arising out of road traffic accidents and EL/PL claims with significant catastrophic injuries such as brain injuries and paraplegia and ranging in value from £500,000 to £10m. Claire was instrumental, together with our then Head of Learning & Development Dept., in enabling HF to become one of the first firms in Manchester to take part in the pilot Legal Apprenticeship Scheme - a scheme that, due to her own background - from a council estate in London with little inclination and few routes to a career in law - she championed wholeheartedly. Strongly supporting her own personal and professional views on how to empower female staff coming through the ranks, she is a key member of HF’s Network of Women and has been involved since it was established in 2018. Having already played a key role as coach and mentor to countless people within the business over the years, Claire is passionate about helping others to focus on their strengths and instilling them with the confidence to be the best they can be. She enjoys working closely with young female aspirant lawyers from backgrounds that would not usually or traditionally contemplate a career in the law. Her objective here is to create a genuine and lasting legacy that will inspire other women to progress by not only strategic, well-planned and focused hard work, but also by highlighting that this can be done even if they want a family; to show them that HF allows you to achieve your goals AND maintain a positive work/life balance. FIRM PROFILE Originally established in 1969, Horwich Farrelly (HF)has grown to become one of the leading providers of legal and handling services to the UK general insurance claims sector. Unlike many of the other firms operating in this area they are true specialists – general insurance claims work is all that HF does. Indeed, their mission is to be the specialist legal firm of choice within the general insurance sector. HF’s business strategy is wholly focused on continually improving the quality, cost effectiveness and range of services we offer to general insurance clients – be they insurers, self-insured organisations, managing general agents, public sector bodies, brokers or other claims services providers – with the aim of minimising their total indemnity spend and supporting their customer service objectives. “Claire was instrumental, together with our then Head of Learning & Development Dept., in enabling HF to become one of the first firms in Manchester to take part in the pilot Legal Apprenticeship Scheme”
